A bride refused to proceed with her marriage after the jaimala ritual (exchange of garlands) upon discovering the groom was not employed in a government job as she had believed, but held a private sector position. The incident took place in Uttar Pradesh’s Farrukhabad district. The groom’s family departed later that day after a long wait without the bride.
The girl’s family had arranged the marriage to an engineer from Balrampur, Chhattisgarh. An intermediary claimed that the groom’s family lived in rented accommodation in Kannauj, and that the groom himself was a government engineer who owned six plots of land and 20 bighas of land.
The wedding procession came to a guest house on the wedding night. At night, the ritual of Dwarchar was performed with the arrival of the wedding procession. The Jaimala ceremony was also held late at night. Meanwhile, at around quarter to one in the night, the bride got the news that the groom does not have a government job but a private job, so she refused to complete the wedding rituals.
When questioned about her decision to halt the wedding, the bride stated her refusal to marry someone in the private sector, claiming she had been assured the groom would hold a government job. Her declaration left both families speechless, and despite their attempts to reason with her, the bride remained resolute in her decision.
Meanwhile, as the situation escalated, concerned residents gathered and attempted to mediate between the families. However, the groom, in an attempt to resolve the impasse, requested his payslip via telephone and presented it to the bride’s family. The document revealed a monthly salary of Rs 1,20,000.
The bride however remained resolute in her refusal to marry. Consequently, the families decided that both parties should settle the wedding expenses amongst themselves. After a financial agreement was reached, the groom departed without his bride. Both the parties settled the expenses and the groom’s side returned without the bride. No complaint was lodged in the police station.
