A detailed intelligence assessment accessed by CNN-News18 exposes a coordinated array of Chinese infrastructure megaprojects along the Himalayan frontier that pose severe strategic, ecological, and economic threats to South Asian neighbours, including India, Nepal, and Bhutan.
The Medog Super Dam
Situated in Medog County, Tibet, near the border of Arunachal Pradesh, this megaproject consists of a five-stage cascade power station system along the Great Bend of the Yarlung Tsangpo River. With construction launched in July 2025 and total capital expenditure projected between $137 billion and $170 billion, the facility is slated for operational rollout in 2033.
Once completed, it will generate 60,000 megawatts of electricity—triple the total output of the Three Gorges Dam—to fuel industrial hubs in mainland China. Indian intelligence notes caution that this infrastructure gives Beijing unprecedented operational control over Asia’s primary freshwater source. Positioned directly along the Tibet-Nepal frontier, the Gyirong complex represents a multi-billion-dollar expansion under the Belt and Road Initiative, with investments ranging from $1.5 billion to $2.75 billion. Incorporating modernised border post checkpoints, immigration hubs, and high-altitude dry ports, it serves as Beijing’s primary economic and geopolitical gateway straight into central Nepal and the Kathmandu valley.
However, heavy engineering cuts into fragile Himalayan slopes around the Trishuli River and Lhende Khola have destabilised high-altitude glacial terrain. Geologists warn that these extensive earthworks elevate the risk of ice collapses and accelerated river velocities during sudden natural disasters.
Border Xiaokang Village Grid
China has operationalised a grid of over 600 heavily fortified, state-subsidised civilian settlements positioned directly along disputed borderlines with Nepal, Bhutan, and India. Backed by hundreds of millions of dollars in ongoing state subsidies, key complexes include Pangda Village inside the Doklam plateau zone and the Gyalaphug settlement network within Bhutan’s northern valleys.
These dual-use settlements physically assert Beijing’s territorial claims while functioning as forward operating bases for the People’s Liberation Army. Constructing dense concrete housing, access roads, and drainage systems directly encroaches upon sovereign territory, creating severe long-term security strains for Bhutan and Nepal.
Lhasa–Yadong Railway Extension
The high-altitude rail line extends from Lhasa past Gyantse down to Yadong County at an estimated cost of $4 billion to $5 billion. By extending heavy rail connectivity to the tip of the strategic Chumbi Valley, the network enables rapid deployment of troops, heavy weaponry, and military logistics to the borders of Sikkim and Bhutan.
The physical construction—requiring heavy mountain tunnelling and blasting through seismically active zones—causes ongoing slope instability and severe rockfalls across shared watersheds. Strategically, positioning heavy rail infrastructure directly above India’s vulnerable Siliguri Corridor (“Chicken’s Neck”) forces downstream regional neighbours to permanently divert critical national resources toward military readiness and regional disaster management.
