The government has made BIS registration mandatory for smartphone screen guards. This new decision will have a direct impact on the poor quality screen guards sold in the market.
Now companies will be allowed to sell them only after passing the BIS test. The central government has taken this step to improve the safety of smartphone users and the quality of screen guards.
New rules will be applicable across the country from April 1, 2027
According to the ministry’s notification, the new BIS standards set for smartphone screen guards will be implemented across the country from April 1, 2027. This means that after 2027, there will be a ban on the sale of screen guards without BIS registration and without fixed standards.

Benefit to customers: You will get rid of cheap, duplicate and easily breakable screen guards available in the market. The display will be safe due to the fixed quality standards.
Conditions for companies: Companies will have to get their products tested in BIS lab. Import and local production of screen protectors without BIS mark will be banned.

Question 1: How will a common user know whether the screen guard is BIS certified or not?
answer: BIS’s ISI mark and registration number will be printed on packets of screen protectors sold after April 2027. Users will be able to verify this number by visiting ‘BIS CARE’ app.
Question 2: Will the cheap screen guards available at local shops costing ₹50-₹100 be discontinued?
answer: Yes, sale of any brand or local glass without BIS testing and without registration will be illegal. This will curb the market of unbranded cheap Chinese screen guards.
Question 3: Will this increase the prices of screen guards?
answer: Companies will have to spend more in getting testing done from BIS lab, paying certification fees and improving quality. In such a situation, screen guards can be 10% to 20% more expensive.
Question 4: What harm does a poor quality screen guard cause to the phone and the user?
answer:
- Screen Damage: On receiving a slight shock, the bad glass itself breaks and also breaks the original display of the phone.
- Touch and Fingerprint Issues: Due to poor quality, the in-display fingerprint sensor does not work properly and the touch response becomes slow.
- Effect on eyes: Cheap glasses do not have proper anti-glare or UV coating, due to which the reflection of the screen harms the eyes.
Question 5: What will happen if a shopkeeper sells a screen guard without BIS mark after April 1, 2027?
answer: Under the Bureau of Indian Standards i.e. BIS Act, selling or manufacturing goods without certification will be a crime. Shopkeepers, importers and manufacturers who do so may face fines and confiscation of goods.
