In a shocking incident, a24-year-old woman was allegedly abducted and gangraped by six men in Bihar’s Purnea district, police said. The survivor managed to call the police using the mobile phone of one of the accused, leading to her rescue and the arrest of one person.
As per media reports, the incident took place on Saturday night when the woman, who works as an orchestra dancer was abducted around 9 pm from Newalal Chowk by two men in a car while she was returning home. She was taken nearly 25 km away to a godown in Dagarua, where four other men were present.
According to the survivor, her mouth was tied so she could not scream. During the ride, she saw a board that read “Dagarua” and realised she was far from the city.
She told police that she was forced to consume alcohol and forced to dance, after which all six men raped her one after another. After the assault, five of them fled after locking her inside a room, while one man, purportedly intoxicated, fell asleep inside.
Taking advantage of the situation, the woman used the sleeping man’s phone to call the emergency number 112 and informed the police about everything.
Police reached the location soon after receiving the emergency call. The door was broken open. The woman was found in a critical condition, with liquor bottles scattered inside the godown. One man was found lying intoxicated at the spot and was taken into custody.
The victim was rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Purnea, where her statement was recorded. Her medical examination is currently underway, police said.
The arrested accused was identified as Mohammad Junaid (35), a local resident. The car that was allegedly used in the crime was also seized, police said.
An officer said an FIR was registered on the basis of the survivor’s statement. “A case of abduction followed by gangrape has been registered against three named and three unidentified accused. All of them are residents of Dagarua,” he said, adding that raids are on to arrest the remaining five accused.
Meanwhile, Purnia MP Pappu Yadav criticised the Bihar government over law and order. He said that crimes like the Purnia gang rape, the Khagaria case of a 5-year-old girl, and the Patna student murder showed that fear of law has ended.
“Giving alcohol and drugs to girls before assault is dangerous. Such perpetrators should face death penalty through a speedy trial. There should be no compromise with crimes against daughters,” he said.
