England head coach Thomas Tuchel opined that the successes of the women’s team and the youth sides could prove to be good omen for the men’s unit with the FIFA World Cup 2025 looming large on the horizon.
Sarah Wiegman guided the English Lionesses to back-to-back Euro titles, while Lee Carsley helmed the U21 double champions to immense success.
When quizzed if Wiegman and Carsley’s victories pile more pressure on the German to deliver a first World Cup for the English since 1966, Tuchel voiced that the nation’s triumph in various segments could prove to be a good luck charm heading into the World Cup in North America.
“Not at all. If it is something, then it is a good omen and I was so happy for Sarina and Lee because they made it and they made an extraordinary effort and a huge success with back-to-back victories…
“It is possible (to win a trophy with England), there is no curse on English teams and it is a good omen and we will do our very best to follow their example.”
Tuchel revealed that he gets a lot of good natured inputs from the English faithful in the German’s quest to restore glory to the Three Lions.
“I get a lot of tips, that’s for sure, but always in a friendly manner,” the 52-year-old said.
“Most of them just say, ‘Bring it home, Thomas’. That’s basically the task,” he added.
England are slated to take on Andorra and Serbia in their upcoming FIFA WC Qualifiers.
“Unfortunately, John Stones just left,” Tuchel said.
“He came with minor issues, muscular issues, to camp and didn’t progress as we thought and hoped he would.
“So, he left camp this morning (Friday) because we will not take the risk. Everyone else is available.”
“Yes. Kane starts. There is no balance, the competition is on and it is World Cup season,” he said.
“We will face — in both matches — a deep block and a 5-4-1 for sure in the first match and it is the challenge to overcome that quickly and aggressively and play with more rhythm than we did in the first match against Andorra,” said Tuchel.
