Banks will remain open on Sunday, September 27: Government’s decision before the 3-day nationwide strike; RBI approved




The Finance Ministry has informed that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has given approval to keep all bank branches, offices, ATM-linked branches and currency chests fully operational in the country on coming Sunday i.e. 27 September 2026. This step has been taken in view of the three-day nationwide bank strike proposed by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) from 28 to 30 September 2026. Just before the strike, weekend holidays were falling on 26 September (Saturday) and 27 September (Sunday). In such a situation, there was a danger of banking services being disrupted for five consecutive days. In an effort to provide relief before the strike, the government has taken this decision keeping in mind the banking needs of the citizens. According to the ministry, on Sunday (27 September 2026) all public sector banks (PSBs) and regional rural banks (RRBs) will function normally like normal days. Finance Ministry’s statement: Finance Ministry said in the notification, “To ensure that the essential banking needs of the public are not adversely affected for a long time, all public sector banks and regional rural banks will function normally on Sunday, September 27, 2026. The Reserve Bank has approved all branches, offices, ATM-linked branches and currency chests to remain fully operational on this day.” Appealing to unions to postpone the strike, the government has reiterated that the welfare and convenience of bank customers is its top priority. “The government and bank managements have appealed to the bank unions to postpone the proposed strike. Steps have also been taken to ensure that essential banking services continue without any interruption,” the ministry said. What is United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU)? United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) is a joint forum of nine major trade unions of bank employees and officers in India. This organization negotiates with the government and bank management regarding salary increase, working hours, pension and other demands of bank employees and calls for a strike if the demands are not met.
