Iran said it has received an initial draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United States that could pave the way for reopening commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz within a month as part of a broader effort to end the ongoing West Asia conflict.
According to Iranian State TV, cited by Reuters, the proposed framework envisages commercial maritime traffic through the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz returning to pre-war levels if American forces withdraw from Iran’s vicinity and the US lifts its naval blockade. The report said the framework specifically excludes military vessels and broadly proposes that Tehran would manage commercial shipping through the waterway in coordination with Oman.
However, Iranian authorities stressed that the understanding remains unofficial and has not yet been finalised. Tehran also reportedly said it would not implement any commitments without “tangible verification” of American actions.
The draft MoU reportedly states that if a final agreement between Tehran and Washington is reached within 60 days, it could eventually be formalised as a binding United Nations Security Council resolution.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most strategically important shipping corridors, carrying a major share of global oil and LNG trade. Any disruption in traffic through the narrow waterway has immediate consequences for global energy prices and supply chains.
The reported framework comes amid months of heightened military tensions in West Asia that have sharply disrupted maritime movement, pushed up crude oil prices and increased global shipping risks. There was no immediate official confirmation from Washington on the reported draft agreement.
