The Azerbaijan Grand Prix will remain part of the Formula 1 calendar until at least 2030 after organisers announced a four-year contract extension on Saturday.

The deal secures the future of the Baku City Circuit, whose contract had been set to expire after the 2026 race.

First introduced in 2016, the high-speed street circuit along the city’s seafront and historic old town was initially considered a surprise addition to the schedule.

It has since earned a reputation for unpredictability, with Sergio Perez the only driver to claim multiple victories in Baku, while three of the current grid have claimed victory once – Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, and Oscar Piastri – with the Australian taking the chequered flag last year following a dramatic battle with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.

“The circuit is unique, with technical sections and long straights that run through the stunning shoreline and historic old town, delivering an eventful and entertaining race every year,” said F1 president and CEO Stefano Domenicali.

“This renewal reflects the strong trust and commitment between Formula 1, the Azerbaijani government, and the promoter, and paves the way for an exciting future in the country.”

This year’s edition of the race takes place on Sunday, with Baku once again expected to provide drama and surprises.
