Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has spoken with Israel’s President Isaac Herzog following the recent terror attack at Bondi Beach in Sydney that targeted members of the Jewish community. During the call on Tuesday, Albanese said he was deeply disturbed by the violence and expressed strong support for Australia’s Jewish community.
Prime Minister Albanese conveyed his profound shock and sadness over the attack. He offered heartfelt condolences to the families who lost loved ones and said the entire country stood with them during this painful time. He also acknowledged the fear and distress caused within the Jewish community following the incident.
President Herzog said he was horrified by the “catastrophic terror attack” and shared his deep sorrow with the victims’ families. He also wished those who were injured a full and speedy recovery.
Australia invites Israel President
During the conversation, Albanese informed President Herzog that the Australian government would formally invite him to visit Australia. He said the Governor-General would issue the invitation in line with official protocol and that the visit should take place as soon as possible.
President Herzog said he would accept the invitation. He also mentioned that the President of the Zionist Federation of Australia had sent him a separate official invitation, which he also planned to honour.
President Herzog stressed the urgent need to confront the growing threat of antisemitism, extremism and jihadist terror. He said countries must use all legal measures available to protect communities and prevent such attacks.
