At least 20 people died, and many others were injured after a massive fire broke out at a restaurant in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar area on Wednesday morning.
The incident occurred at the multi-storied Lemon Green Restaurant in the Hauz Rani area of South Delhi, and according to officials, many of those killed were foreigners.
The Delhi Fire Service (DFS) received a call regarding the blaze at around 9.45 am, following which firefighting and rescue teams were rushed to the spot.
The fire incident falls under the jurisdiction of the Nehru Place fire station. Officials said the blaze erupted at around 8.50 am.
In an initial statement, the Delhi Fire Service said 37 people were rescued from the basement of the restaurant by DFS personnel and shifted to the hospital through CATS ambulances.
The fire department added that Divisional Officer (DO) Ravinder from the Nehru Place fire station was present at the site and supervising the rescue operation.
According to the Delhi Police, 11 injured individuals were initially evacuated from the building and taken to the hospital for medical treatment.
Police officials said details regarding the condition of the injured would be known only after doctors issue their assessment.
A senior fire official said 10 fire tenders were deployed to contain the blaze at the restaurant.
The fire was later brought under control, though search and rescue operations continued in the building as authorities checked for any remaining occupants.
Authorities are yet to ascertain the exact cause of the fire.
Fire officials and police personnel continued their inspection of the premises even after the blaze was controlled.
Soon after the incident, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, in an X post, expressed grief over the incident.
“Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives in the devastating fire incident in Malviya Nagar. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for the speedy recovery of those injured and for strength and courage to all those affected by this heartbreaking tragedy,” she wrote.
“The Delhi government is closely monitoring the situation. All necessary medical assistance & support are being extended to the affected families. In this hour of grief Delhi Govt. stands firmly with the affected families. We remain committed to providing every possible support to those impacted by this tragedy,” the Chief Minister added.
AAP leader Somnath Bharti also reacted to the incident in a post on X.
“Massive fire in a multi-storied building in Hauzrani, my assembly constituency, today around 8.30 a.m., casualties possible. Majorly South African nationals,” Bharti wrote.
The incident comes a day after another major emergency in the national capital, when 10 people were injured following a suspected LPG cylinder explosion that led to the collapse of a building in Delhi’s Mukundpur area on Tuesday morning.
