Assam Facing A Civilisational War: CM Sarma Warns Of ‘Systematic Attempt’ To Weaken State

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday delivered a fierce warning about what he termed a systematic attempt to weaken Assam from within, declaring that every election in the state has become a battle for survival rather than politics. Addressing the second day of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state executive meeting in Guwahati, he said Assam is being pushed towards a West Bengal–like situation, where demographic pressure and narrative manipulation threaten the very foundations of civilisation.

Calling the struggle existential, the chief minister alleged a deliberate distortion of Assam’s history and cultural ethos. Referring to Ahom general Lachit Borphukan and his trusted commander Bagh Hazarika, he asserted that their victories against the Mughals were collective and civilisational, not isolated episodes to be selectively reinterpreted. He cautioned that injecting new narratives around historical figures should not weaken Assam’s united resistance against foreign aggression.

Sarma strongly objected to what he described as an engineered shift in Assam’s cultural discourse from “Shankar–Madhav” to “Shankar–Azan”, warning that such reframing fragments societal unity and erodes the state’s civilisational identity. “This narrative has been inserted with intent,” he said, alleging an internal design to divide the people.

Raising alarm over national security, the chief minister flagged the strategic vulnerability of the Siliguri Corridor, or the ‘Chicken Neck’, noting that Bangladeshi-origin populations reside on both sides of the corridor. He questioned where allegiances would lie in the event of a crisis, calling it a matter of grave concern for Assam and the nation.

Framing the issue as a civilisational battle rather than a political contest, the CM Sarma urged party workers to remain vigilant, asserting that Assam’s future depends on resisting demographic, historical, and narrative erosion.

BJP National Working President Nitin Nabin also addressed party workers at the inaugural session of the state executive meeting at the Srimanta Sankaradeva International Auditorium in Guwahati. In his address, Nabin criticised the Opposition, stating that during the tenure of the previous Congress government, illegal foreigners could easily enter Assam, but such activities are now impossible.

“Earlier, it was easy for illegal foreigners to enter Assam, but now it is impossible,” Nabin said.

Addressing the gathering, Nitin Nabin mentioned that since 2009, he has had a close association with Assam through his organisational work in the BJP Yuva Morcha. He highlighted the significant changes in Assam’s political environment between then and now, and noted that since 2016, the BJP government in Assam has driven substantial development.
