The fifth edition of the Asian Para Games will officially be declared open on Sunday, October 18, when Aichi-Nagoya welcomes 45 nations and their athletes to the six-day fiesta.
India finished fifth in the medal standings at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Para Games, bagging 29 gold, 31 silver and 51 bronze medals for its best-ever tally at the continental multi-sport event.
India missed out on fourth place, finishing just one gold medal behind South Korea.
Improving on that position will be a challenge, but a strong gold-medal haul and podium finishes across disciplines would make for a successful campaign, even if India fall short of its record 111-medal tally.
India will face a different challenge in Aichi-Nagoya, with the nation all set to field around 168 athletes across 11 disciplines, fewer than the 303 who competed in Hangzhou in 2023.
Stricter participation quotas and changes to the competition programme have contributed to the smaller Indian contingent.
With a smaller contingent, India will face an uphill task to match its previous medal tally. Much will depend on the performance of its established medal-winners and whether its emerging athletes can make an impact on the continental stage.
India’s campaign at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Para Games started on Saturday, October 17, with competitions in para-badminton, para-table tennis, boccia and blind football getting underway ahead of Sunday’s official opening ceremony.
