India’s Nishad Kumar clinched the Men’s Long Jump T47 gold medal with a jump of 7.11m on his debut in the event at the Asian Para Games.

The two-time Paralympic silver medallist produced a consistent series of jumps at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium to secure India’s second gold medal of the Games. He opened with 6.95m before moving into the lead with 7.09m in his second attempt. His third-round effort of 7.11m proved decisive, and he matched the distance in the fifth round before finishing with 7.07m.

Uzbekistan’s Omadbek Khasanov claimed silver with a season-best 6.99m, while Sri Lanka’s Mohammadu Safran took bronze with 6.55m. Primarily known for his achievements in the high jump, Nishad only began exploring the long jump last year.

Born on October 3, 1999, in Una, Himachal Pradesh, Nishad lost his right hand in a grass-cutting machine accident when he was six years old. Inspired by his mother, a state-level volleyball player and discus thrower, he continued pursuing sports and eventually specialised in high jump. He made his international debut at the 2017 Asian Youth Para Games, winning gold.

His breakthrough on the senior international stage came at the Tokyo Paralympics in 2020, where he won silver with an Asian-record jump of 2.06m. He repeated the silver-medal finish at the Paris Paralympics in 2024, underlining his consistency at the highest level.

Nishad also won gold in the men’s high jump T47 event at the 2022 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou. At the World Para Athletics Championships, he claimed bronze in 2019 before securing silver medals in 2023 and 2024. He reached the top of the podium at the 2025 edition, adding another major title to his career.
