A fifth-round throw of 15.66m helped Suvarna Raj of India win the women’s F54 discus gold at the Asian Para Games in Nagoya (Japan) on Thursday, capping a six-attempt series in which she crossed 15 metres four times. She finished ahead of Iran’s Shahla Hadidi, who recorded 15.45m for silver.
Vietnam’s Thi Ngoc Thuy Nguyen took bronze with a mark of 14.65m.
Suvarna entered para athletics in 2017 and has since established herself among Asia’s leading F54 discus throwers. Ranked second in the continent, she has worn India’s colours at three Asian Para Games and competed at multiple international meets.
Coach Pintu Nagar has guided her development in the sport.
Her latest podium finish follows a bronze-medal performance in the women’s F54/55 discus throw at the Dubai World Para Athletics Grand Prix 2026, organised as the 17th Fazza International Para Athletics Championship.
Earlier this year, she secured two medals at the Canberra Track Meet in Australia, winning the discus throw and finishing second in shot put.
Recognition for Suvarna’s achievements is not limited to the sporting arena.
The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports presented her with the National Youth Award in 2015.
Outside competition, she works to make public spaces and services more accessible, combining her profession as an accessibility specialist with disability rights advocacy.
Her work in the field includes more than 1,000 accessibility audits conducted across India. She has also served as the Election Commission of India’s brand ambassador for accessible elections.
