India moved to five medals on Day 3 of the Asian Games 2026, headlined by the country’s first gold of the edition, even as the men’s hockey team continued its unbeaten run and India secured guaranteed medals in wushu and men’s team badminton. It was a mixed day elsewhere, with contrasting results in table tennis, badminton and boxing.

First Gold Arrives, Hockey Keeps Winning
India opened its gold medal account on Day 3 with women’s cricket as Harmanpreet Kaur’s team beat Sri Lanka by 147 runs in the final. Smriti Mandhana’s 79 helped score 216/3 in the first innings, and Deepti Sharma shone with a three-wicket haul in the second innings to seal the win.
The men’s hockey team added to the day’s momentum, with Harmanpreet Singh’s side making it two wins from two matches, with a staggering 16-1 thrashing of Sri Lanka, to stay firmly on course in the group stage as they continue their bid for a podium finish.
Wushu, Badminton Men Confirm Medals
India secured a wushu medal after advancing to the medal rounds, with Roshibina Devi beating Man Sin Chu of Macao, China, adding to the tally of guaranteed podium finishes.
Ayush Shetty beat Koki Watanabe 2-0 (21-10, 21-19) to progress to the semi-final against China/South Korea and ensured the men’s badminton team also confirmed a medal for India, continuing their strong showing in the discipline.
Table Tennis: Women Advance, Men Bow Out
It was a day of contrasting fortunes in table tennis. The women’s team came through a tense contest against Thailand, winning 3-2 to book a place in the quarterfinals. The men’s team, however, saw their campaign end in the round of 16, going down to the Republic of Korea in straight sets, 3-0.
Badminton Women Fall To Japan In Quarterfinals
The women’s badminton team’s campaign ended in the quarterfinals after a 1-3 loss to Japan. PV Sindhu went down to Akane Yamaguchi as India fell behind in the tie, before the doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand kept India’s semifinal hopes alive with a win. Japan, however, closed out the tie, with Nozomi Okuhara convincingly beating youngster Tanvi Sharma 21-12, 21-10 to eliminate India.
Boxing Duo Make Progress
In the ring, Jadumani Singh advanced through the preliminaries of the men’s 55kg category to reach the round of 16. In the women’s draw, Sakshi Chaudhary eased through her round of 32 bout in the 51kg category to continue India’s boxing campaign.
Shooting Pair Fall Agonisingly Short
The mixed team of Parth Mane and Elavenil Valarivan qualified for the 10m air rifle mixed team final but could not convert it into a medal, finishing fourth in the summit clash with a total of 376.3.
Kabaddi Delivers
Defending champions India picked up another win in the men’s kabaddi competition, beating Korea 63-31 and maintaining their unbeaten record in the tournament.
Last in Swimming
In the pool, the men’s swimming team booked their place in the final of the 4x100m medley relay but came last. Rishabh Das, Danush Suresh, Benedicton Rohit and Akash Mani clocked 3:40.41s to finish seventh among 16 teams in the qualifying round but only managed 3:44.26 in the final to finish eighth, 16.37 seconds behind gold medallists China.
Heartbreak For Chetan In Karate
There was disappointment in karate, where Chetan lost his bronze medal bout in the men’s Kumite -84kg category, missing out on a place on the podium. The score was tied 1-1 but Chinese Taipei won the medal by virtue of scoring the first point (yuko).
