Naorem Roshibina Devi defeated Indonesia’s Thania Kusumaningtyas 2-0 in the Wushu women’s 60kg semifinal on Wednesday (September 23). Assured of at least a silver medal, she will face Xiaoyu Zhang of China in the final on Thursday.

The victory assured Roshibina Devi of a third Asian Games medal, adding to the bronze she won in the 60kg category at the 2018 Jakarta Games and the silver she claimed in the same event at the 2022 Asian Games.

Roshibina began her campaign on Monday with a victory over Bangladesh’s Shika Khatun in the pre-quarterfinals. She produced a dominant display in the quarterfinals, winning 5-0 on points to book her place in the last four.

Her medal is India’s first confirmed Wushu medal at the ongoing Asian Games, with Roshibina now having an opportunity to change its colour to gold in the final.

Roshibina’s selection had earlier sparked controversy after the Wushu Federation said she was brought into the Indian team following an injury to Divyanshi Chaudhary. Divyanshi disputed the decision, claiming she was fit and alleging that the federation had favoured Roshibina, who had finished fourth in the selection trials and initially missed out on the team.

Divyanshi later accepted the decision and turned her attention towards making a comeback.

In the men’s 56kg quarterfinal, India’s Aryan was knocked out after suffering a 1-2 defeat to Uzbekistan’s Saydullo Abdurashitov.

Earlier on Tuesday, India’s Hanjabam Langlentombi Devi finished ninth in the women’s Nanquan & Nandao final with a score of 18.839. Nyeman Wangsu finished 15th in the women’s Changquan final.

Indian Wushu athletes have produced several promising performances at the Games, with Suraj Singh Mayanglambam also coming close to a podium finish on Sunday.
