The Arunachal Pradesh Police registered a case against musician Kon Waii Son for publicly killing a chicken and then drinking its blood during a stage performance in Itanagar, said officials on Tuesday.
Kon Waii Son hails from Seppa in Arunachal Pradesh’s East Kameng district and is a well-known songwriter, composer, and musician.
During the live stage show, Son killed the chicken by slitting the bird’s throat and then went on to drink its blood, prompting the police to file a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act, 1960, against him.
Police filed the FIR at the Itanagar Police Station based on a complaint made by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), India, an animal protection organisation operating worldwide.
The video of the incident surfaced on social media, triggering controversy surrounding the artist. PETA India recommends that perpetrators of animal abuse undergo psychiatric evaluation and receive counselling, as abusing animals indicates a deep psychological disturbance.
Earlier, PETA India also sent a proposal to the Government of India, seeking an amendment to the PCA Act to increase penalties for cruelty to animals.
