Ajit Pawar Killed In Plane Crash: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar died in a plane crash on Wednesday morning. He was travelling in a Bombardier Learjet 45 business jet, with five other people on board. The aircraft, operated by VSR Ventures and registered as VT-SSK, crash-landed at Baramati airport, killing all occupants, including crew members.
Bombardier Learjet 45
The Bombardier Learjet 45 is a mid-sized twin-engine business jet aircraft, widely used for corporate and VIP travel. It was introduced in January 1998. The aircraft has a maximum cruise speed of around 460 ktas (852 km/h) and a service ceiling of approximately 51,000 ft.
The Bombardier Learjet 45 can cover almost 1,420 nm (2,630 km) without the need for refuelling. The small size, high cruising speed and long range make it suitable for operations to regional airports like Baramati.
Dimensions-wise, the aircraft has a 15-meter wing span and a length of 14.58 meters. The cabin is 19.9 feet long, 4.10 feet high, and 5.1 feet wide, typically configured for eight passengers.
Earlier, on 14 September 2023, another Learjet aircraft operated by a VSR was involved in an accident. The aircraft was registered as VT-DBL. It crash-landed at Mumbai airport during heavy rain and reduced visibility. It was arriving from Visakhapatnam with six passengers.
Mumbai to Baramati
Amid ongoing elections to the Zilla Parishads and Panchayat Samitis, Dy CM Ajit Pawar was travelling from Mumbai to Baramati to attend a public meeting.
Visuals from the site show the wreckage of the plane engulfed in flames. There were people at the wreckage site trying to extend help in every possible way. The locals had rushed to the spot on seeing the helicopter crash-land.
This incident comes after several aviation-related scares for the leader.
In October 2024, a helicopter intended to pick up his party colleague Sunil Tatkare crashed in Pune, and there have been previous instances of emergency landings in the region due to bad weather.
