Legendary football manager Alex Ferguson was taken to the hospital as a precaution shortly before Manchester United’s Premier League fixture against Liverpool FC at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The 84-year-old, widely regarded as the most successful manager in United’s history, had arrived at the stadium and was in the tunnel area ahead of kick-off when he began to feel unwell. Medical staff attended to him before he was transported to the hospital.
Reports in England indicated that the move was precautionary rather than a response to a medical emergency, with early indications suggesting optimism over his recovery.
Ferguson, who retired in 2013 after an illustrious managerial career, remains a regular presence at United matches, frequently attending games both home and away. Despite stepping down from his formal ambassadorial role following cost-cutting measures introduced under co-owner Jim Ratcliffe in 2024, he continues to maintain strong ties with the club.
Shortly before the incident, Ferguson had been seen in conversation with cardiologist Aseem Malhotra, who later shared on social media that meeting the former manager ahead of the match had been ‘a privilege and honour.’ The interaction appeared routine and offered no immediate indication of any underlying issue.

This is not the first time Ferguson has faced a serious health concern. In 2018, he underwent emergency surgery following a brain haemorrhage, an episode he later described as life-threatening. However, there is currently no evidence to suggest any connection between that incident and Sunday’s developments.
Ferguson’s legacy at Manchester United remains unparalleled. Over nearly 27 years in charge, he guided the club to 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups, four League Cups, and two UEFA Champions League triumphs. His crowning achievement came in the 1998–99 season, when United secured a historic treble, a feat matched in England only by Manchester City in 2023.
