His resignation comes amid a series of exits from the AIADMK in the months following the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

AIADMK MLA M.R. Vijayabaskar, who represents the Karur constituency, resigned from the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on Monday, becoming the latest senior leader to quit the party in the months following the 2026 Assembly elections.
His resignation adds to a growing list of AIADMK leaders who have exited both the legislature and the party since the polls.
Confirming the development, Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar said Vijayabaskar had personally submitted his handwritten resignation letter.
“Under Rule 21 of the Rules of Procedure of the Legislative Assembly, the Hon’ble Mr. M.R. Vijayabaskar, Member of the Legislative Assembly representing the Karur Assembly Constituency, has personally submitted his handwritten letter of resignation from his office to me,” the Speaker said.
Earlier, on June 16, former Tamil Nadu Health Minister and Viralimalai MLA C. Vijayabaskar had also resigned from the Assembly after submitting his handwritten resignation to the Speaker at the Secretariat in Chennai.
M.R. Vijayabaskar now joins a series of prominent leaders who have parted ways with the O. Panneerselvam-led AIADMK, including former minister Vellamandi Natarajan, Anna Trade Union Federation state secretary Kamalakkannan, former Mylapore MLA Natraj, former minister Anandan, former Paramakudi MLA Sadhan Prabhakar and Tirupathur city secretary DT Kumar.
Before that, over 300 members from AIADMK officially joined Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) at the party headquarters in Panaiyur near Chennai, citing the inability to serve the public properly under AIADMK leadership.
