The Centre has approved a two-year extension for Agniveers completing their initial four-year tenure under the Agnipath scheme. The decision will allow those not selected for regular service in the first round to continue serving for two more years, with higher salaries and an enhanced Seva Nidhi package.
Under the revised arrangement, Agniveers serving the additional two-year period will receive a monthly pay package of approximately Rs 43,500 in the fifth year and Rs 47,500 in the sixth year, apart from applicable allowances.
Agniveer Seva Nidhi package after extension
A fresh Seva Nidhi package will be created for the additional two-year engagement. According to details shared by Air Vice Marshal Shekhar Yadav, Agniveers will contribute approximately Rs 3.28 lakh during this period, while the government will contribute around Rs 7.64 lakh.
This means the combined contribution will be approximately Rs 10.92 lakh, excluding any applicable interest. The revised contribution structure will have the government bearing 70% of the amount and the Agniveer contributing the remaining 30%.
The enhanced Seva Nidhi will provide additional financial support to those who complete the extended tenure and leave the service without being selected for regular enrolment.
Who can get the two-year extension?
Under the original Agnipath scheme, up to 25% of each batch of Agniveers could be selected for regular enrolment in the armed forces after four years, based on merit and organisational requirements.
The Cabinet has retained this provision. The remaining 75% will be offered an additional two-year engagement, subject to their willingness and the selection process laid down by the respective services.
After completing six years, these Agniveers will also be considered for regular enrolment as soldiers, provided they are willing to continue and meet the prescribed selection criteria.
The government said the decision followed an assessment of the scheme’s performance over the last four years. It cited Agniveers’ physical fitness, motivation, skills and technological capabilities as factors behind the decision.
