In 2021, a woman claimed a man held a so-called ‘virtual marriage’ with her and then sent another man on the honeymoon, which he watched over a video call.

A man evading the police for nearly four years was arrested in Chhattisgarh’s Jashpur district in connection with a 2021 case of virtual marriage and sexual assault. The man was identified as Dilip Chauhan, 29, from the Kunkuri area.
The case was reported back on April 9, 2022, at the Dulduda police station, where a woman told police that she had received a wrong number call in 2021 from a man who identified himself as Kundan Raj, a resident of Patna, according to a report by India Today.
Kundan contacted the woman after seeing her profile picture on social media, and the duo began speaking on a regular basis. After a few months, he told her that he wanted to marry her. In a bizarre ritual, Kundan conducted what he called a ‘virtual marriage’, where he asked her to apply sindoor (vermilion).
The woman was only 17 years old at the time of the incident and studying in Class 12. She left her studies after the case came to light and is currently receiving counselling and security support.
Bizarre ‘Virtual Honeymoon’
He also recorded explicit videos of the woman. When she refused further recordings, he threatened to release the earlier videos. The woman complied with several of his demands after being pressured, until Kundan told her to meet his associate as part of their honeymoon.
Kundan told the woman that he knew someone from the village and would send him for the honeymoon, while he would watch through a video call. On Kundan’s instructions, Dilip Chauhan allegedly sexually assaulted the victim twice, as per the India Today report.
According to the woman, Chauhan introduced himself as Deepak Yadav and “did wrong things” with her while Kundan watched over a video call. Finally, when the woman refused his demands, Kundan sent the explicit videos to her sister, who went to the police station with the victim and filed a complaint.
On The Run For Four Years
An FIR was registered under sections of the IPC, POCSO Act and IT Act. Kundan was arrested in Patna on April 15, 202, by a police team from Jashpur, and he named Dilip Chauhan as the one who assaulted the woman.
However, soon after the complaint was filed, Chauhan fled and kept changing locations to evade the police. After four years on the run, he was finally traced to Kunkuri and apprehended this month. He was sent to judicial custody, where the victim identified him before a court. Chauhan also confessed to his crime.
“Under Operation Ankush, we arrested him, and further investigation is ongoing. He is being prepared to be sent to judicial custody,” SSP Jashpur Shashi Mohan Singh told India Today. Meanwhile, Chauhan said he acted only on Kundan’s instructions.
