A senior Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist’s death after a fall from a building in Lahore has added another name to the growing list of Pakistan-based militant figures who have died in unusual or unexplained circumstances. Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar, also known as Abu Hashim, reportedly fell from the fourth floor of Markaz Qudsia, a major LeT-linked religious complex in Lahore, on Sunday, October 18.

Sarwar was not an obscure figure within the organisation. A founding member of LeT, he had served as its Lahore chief and was involved in fundraising and financial operations. The United States designated him a terrorist in 2016 for his alleged role in supporting the group’s financial network.

The circumstances of his death, however, remain unclear. While reports have described the fall as mysterious, other accounts said he slipped while climbing the mosque’s stairs and suffered fatal head injuries.

His death comes against the backdrop of several high-profile killings of Pakistan-based militants and separatist figures in recent years, many involving unidentified gunmen, targeted shootings or deaths whose circumstances have attracted speculation.

The incidents are not all alike: some were openly reported as assassinations, while others involved unclear circumstances.

December 2016: Javed Khanani Dies In A Fall In Karachi

One of the earlier cases that drew attention was the death of Javed Khanani, a director of the money-exchange company Khanani and Kalia International. On December 4, 2016, Khanani died after falling from the eighth floor of the under-construction Saima Towers in Karachi.

  • According to Pakistani newspaper Dawn, police investigated whether the fall was accidental, a suicide or the result of foul play. Investigators sought CCTV footage and questioned workers at the site. Police also said Khanani’s family took his body away before a post-mortem examination could be conducted.

Khanani had faced investigations linked to alleged illegal money-transfer operations. His death therefore attracted considerable attention, but the circumstances alone do not establish a connection with militant activity or a targeted killing.

March 2022: Zahoor Ibrahim Mistry Killed In Karachi

Zahoor Ibrahim Mistry, also known as Zahid Akhund, was reported killed in Karachi in March 2022. He was identified as a Jaish-e-Mohammed operative and one of the five hijackers involved in the 1999 hijacking of Indian Airlines flight IC-814, which was taken to Kandahar after being seized in Kathmandu.

February 20, 2023: Bashir Ahmad Peer Shot Dead In Rawalpindi

Bashir Ahmad Peer, also known as Imtiyaz Alam, a Pakistan-based Hizbul Mujahideen figure, was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Rawalpindi. Reports said the attackers arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire at close range near a shop.

Peer was described as a senior figure involved in facilitating the movement of arms and ammunition into Jammu and Kashmir. India had designated him a terrorist in October 2022. His killing was among a series of attacks against militants in Pakistan during 2023.

February 26, 2023: Syed Khalid Raza Killed In Karachi

Six days later, Syed Khalid Raza was shot dead outside his home in Karachi. Reports linked him to al-Badr, an organisation that has operated in Kashmir, and described him as a former militant commander who had also worked in education.

The attackers were reported to have arrived on a motorcycle and shot him in the head. Pakistani reporting described the incident as a targeted killing, while a Sindhi separatist outfit was reported to have claimed responsibility.

September 8, 2023: Riaz Ahmad Killed During Prayers

Riaz Ahmad, also known as Abu Qasim Kashmiri, was shot dead inside Al-Quds mosque in Rawalakot, in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir, while offering Fajr prayers. According to Dawn, the assailant fired four bullets before fleeing with an accomplice. Ahmad had previously been associated with Jamaat-ud-Dawa and was linked to the Dhangri terror attack.

September 12, 2023: Maulana Ziaur Rehman Killed In Karachi

Rehman, a seminary administrator, was shot dead during an evening walk in Karachi’s Gulistan-e-Jauhar neighbourhood. Police initially alleged possible involvement of India’s intelligence agency, RAW. However, on October 3, police announced the arrest of four alleged street criminals in connection with the killing, saying the investigation had uncovered a criminal network.

October 11, 2023: Shahid Latif Killed In Sialkot

Shahid Latif, a Jaish-e-Mohammed operative identified by Indian authorities as a key conspirator in the 2016 Pathankot airbase attack, was shot dead inside Noor Madina mosque in Daska, Sialkot district. According to reports, gunmen entered the mosque during prayers and killed Latif and another worshipper before escaping. No group publicly claimed responsibility at the time.

December 2023: LeT Commander Adnan Ahmed Killed In Karachi

Adnan Ahmed, also known as Abu Hanzala, was reportedly shot outside his home in Karachi. Attackers fired at him at close range, inflicting fatal injuries. He was accused of coordinating attacks on security convoys in Jammu and Kashmir, including the 2016 Pampore attack on a CRPF convoy.

The cases show a pattern of attacks against figures associated with terrorist organisations, but they do not establish a single coordinated campaign or a common perpetrator.

Sarwar’s death is different from the shootings that dominate the timeline. The reported fall from a fourth-floor building has not, on the information publicly available, been established as an assassination. Nor is there confirmed evidence linking it to the earlier killings.

What makes the incident significant is Sarwar’s position in LeT’s financial network and his long-standing association with the organisation’s leadership. His death raises questions about the circumstances of the fall, but those questions can only be answered through reliable investigative findings.
