A record was made as 274 people scaled the Mount Everest on Wednesday, the highest number to reach the summit from the mountain’s south side in a single day.

CNN quoted Rishi Bhandari, secretary general of the Expedition Operators Association of Nepal, saying that the latest record is nearly 50 more than the previous high of 223 set on May 22, 2019, though the overall number was higher that day because some climbers reached the summit from the mountain’s northern side in Tibet.

He cited good weather conditions as one of the reasons for the large number of climbers ascending the 29,029 feet peak. Strong winds are forecast for later in the week, he added.

While China has not issue any permits to climb the north face, this year, Nepal has issued nearly 500 permits to climb the mountain this year.

Everest was first climbed in 1953 by Tenzing Norgay and New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary. Among non-Sherpa climbers, British guide Kenton Cool holds the record with 19 Everest summits, followed by American climbers Dave Hahn and Garrett Madison with 15 ascents each.
