Former Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe has been arrested by the police for misusing government money. He is accused of using government money for a personal visit to London in 2023 while being President.

The AFP quoted a police officer as saying that Wickremesinghe had arrived in the Financial Crime Investigation Department (FCID) this morning to inquire about the matter.

FCID presented him to the Colombo Fort Magistrate. He was then arrested.

Ranil visited London in 2023 to attend the convocation of his wife Professor Maitri Wickramasinghe while being President.

Along with this, salary to his personal bodyguard was also given to the government treasury.

Wickremesinghe became President in 2022

Wickramasinghe became President for the remaining term of Gotbaya Rajapaksa in July 2022, when Rajapaksa left the post after protests against corruption and mismanagement.
