British Prime Minister Keir Starmer may announce his resignation on Monday and may also reveal the roadmap for leaving his post. This claim has been made in a report by the British newspaper ‘The Observer’.
According to the report, Starmer, after talking to cabinet ministers, advisors and trade union leaders, decided that it had become difficult for him to remain in office. However, according to Reuters, government sources rejected this claim, saying that Starmer is still focusing on his work as Prime Minister.
According to Reuters, more than 100 MPs from Starmer’s Labor Party have publicly said that he should resign or declare a deadline for leaving his post. These rebel MPs constitute almost a quarter of the party’s total MPs in the House of Commons.
Even if Starmer resigns, he will be the sixth Prime Minister in Britain’s 10-year history to have to leave this post. Earlier, David Cameron, Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak have left the post of PM even before completing their tenure.

Why did the pressure increase on Starmer to step down?
Starmer led the Labor Party to a major election victory in 2024, but after that his popularity has continuously declined. His image has been damaged due to several controversies, policy U-turns and failure to fulfill promises to improve living standards.
Starmer’s troubles worsened when his opponent Andy Burnham won a by-election on Friday. After this victory, Burnham can stake claim to take charge of the party. After the victory, he said that he wants to give a new direction to the country. At the same time, his fellow leaders are demanding Starmer’s resignation.
Former Health Minister Wes Streeting has also indicated that he could challenge Starmer for the leadership if necessary. However, Starmer had clearly said on Friday that he would face any challenge against his leadership and appealed to the Labor Party leaders to avoid mutual infighting.

There the people do not directly elect the Prime Minister, rather the MPs of his party support him. The Prime Minister remains in office as long as the party’s MPs stand with him.
If MPs feel that the declining popularity of a leader may cause harm to the party in the next elections, then they can start the process of electing a new leader even without holding general elections. This is the reason why in Britain, as soon as the party’s support weakens, the need to change the Prime Minister quickly arises.
The rules of Britain’s big parties also make it easier to remove leaders. If 15% of the MPs in the Conservative Party write a letter against any leader, then a no-confidence motion can be brought against him. At the same time, another leader in the Labor Party can stake claim only if he gets the support of more than 20% of the MPs and members of the party.
‘Fixed Term Law’ was brought in 2011 for stability
The ‘Fixed-Term Parliaments Act’ was introduced in 2011. Its purpose was to keep the tenure of the Parliament fixed and to prevent governments from falling prematurely. But later this law was abolished.
Critics say that after this the old rules came into force again, due to which the Prime Minister became more dependent on the support of his party and sudden political crises. In such a situation, as soon as the party’s support decreases, the Prime Minister’s position may be in danger, due to which the tenure of the leaders is becoming short and uncertain.
Pressure to deliver good results in short time after Brexit
According to media reports, after the referendum on Brexit in 2016, there was a big change in British politics. People no longer vote just on the basis of party, but want quick results on issues like inflation, taxes, government services and better living standards.
Experts say that because of this the pressure on leaders to deliver good results in a short time has increased. If the government does not live up to the expectations of the people, then opposition starts within the ruling party and demands for changing the leader begin to arise.
