In Malaysia, you can now be jailed if you forget to offer prayers. According to the Guardian, a 2 -year jail or a fine of 3000 ringt (62 thousand rupees) can be imposed or both can be imposed in Terangenu state.
The government of Teranganu’s PAN-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) announced it on Monday. This provision will be implemented from next week.
The government said that the responsibility of implementing this law will be the responsibility of the people and religious people. The Namazis will be reminded of the new rule through a signboard.
Out of the 12 million population of Teranganu, more than 97% people are Muslims.
People will be reminded to offer Namaz by putting banners
- Banners will be installed in the mosque complex so that people do not forget to pray.
- People who do not offer Namaz through reporting and religious patrolling will be monitored.
Previously not reading Namaz used to pay a fine of 20 thousand
Teranganu is a Muslim -dominated state, where more than 97% of the population of 12 lakhs is Muslim. There were stringent laws about not offering Namaz earlier here.
In the earlier rules, only those who were not involved in three consecutive Friday prayers were punished. The sentence included a maximum of 6 months jail or a fine of 1,000 ringgits (about Rs 20,606).
The new law has tightened the punishment. Muhammad Khalil Hadi, a member of the Teranganu State Assembly, said, “This punishment will be implemented as the last way to save our religion”. He said, “Friday’s prayers are a religious symbol among Muslims.”
The party wants to implement Sharia law across the country
The Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) is the Muslim political party of Malaysia, which was formed on 24 November 1951.
This party is known to implement the Islamic Law (Sharia) and make Malaysia an Islamic state.
PAS especially emphasizes the interests of the Malay Muslim community and it gets strong support from rural and orthodox areas.
PAS has government in 8 out of 13 states in Malaysia. The PAS advocates Sharia and Hudud (Islamic Criminal Penal) across the country, especially in the Kelantan and Teranguan areas.
Teranganu is the only Malaysian state that has no opposition in the Legislative Assembly, here in 2022, all 32 seats won the PAS.

Sharia law refuses to eat and drink in Ramadan
The Sharia law in Malaysia was first passed by the Terangennu State Legislative Assembly in 2001. It was later revised in 2016, adding strict decorated for several crimes.
