Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday said Russian strikes on Ukraine just hours before his meeting with US President Donald Trump “humiliate” diplomatic efforts to end the war. Zelenskyy’s remark came after 10 people were killed in Russian strikes in Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia.
Reiterating that the war must be ended, Zelenskyy demanded reliable security guarantees for Ukraine and said Russia should not be rewarded.
“Putin will commit demonstrative killings to maintain pressure on Ukraine and Europe, as well as to humiliate diplomatic efforts. That is precisely why we are seeking assistance to put an end to the killings. That is why reliable security guarantees are required. That is why Russia should not be rewarded for its participation in this war. The war must be ended. And it is Moscow that must hear the word: Stop,” Zelenskyy wrote in a post on X.
Days after his historic meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, Trump will meet Zelenskyy and several European leaders. European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Finnish President Alexander Stubb will be present at the meeting in Washington DC on Monday.
The high-stakes talks in Alaska on Friday failed to yield any breakthrough on a ceasefire, but Trump said big progress has been made. White House envoy Steve Witkoff said both Trump and Putin had agreed to provide “robust security guarantees” to Ukraine.
