Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday said that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections are likely to be held in October, November, or December, but the final decision lies with the Election Commission (EC).

Speaking at the CNN-News18 Townhall, Mumbai edition, Fadnavis clarified that conducting elections is not the responsibility of the state government but of the Election Commission. He said the EC has already begun the necessary formalities.

“The first step involves the formation of wards for Zilla Parishads, Nagar Palikas, and Mahanagar Palikas, which is almost complete. After that, the EC will release the updated voters’ list,” Fadnavis explained.

He further added that the Election Commission has indicated it will not be possible to conduct all local body elections at once, and therefore they will be held in three phases — starting with Zilla Parishads, followed by Nagar Palikas and then Mahanagar Palikas. Based on this, Fadnavis said he expects the BMC elections to take place anytime between October and December.

The Chief Minister also said there is no division within the Mahayuti alliance and confirmed that all partners will contest the BMC elections together.

Dismissing any speculation of a rift, Fadnavis said, “Eknath Shinde and I are on the same page.”

The Mahayuti alliance includes the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena.
