India’s long list of Chess Grandmasters from the nation enjoyed  recent addition as Rohith Krishna S became the county’s 89th Grandmaster on Wednesday as he reached the norm at the Almaty Masters Qonaev Cup in Kazakhstan.

The 20-year-old, Rohith, who is coached by K.Visweswaran, registered six points from a possible nine to surpass the coveted 2500 ELO Rating.

Rohit, earned his first norm, the Candidate Master in the year 2017, before clinching the FIDE Master title a couple of years later. He became an International Master in the year 2022, before earning his latest norm on Wednesday.

India has churned out one GM after another since the legendary Viswanathan Anand scripted history by become the nation’s first GM in the year 1987.

The proliferation of top-rated Chess players from the peninsular nation has grow exponentially in recent times with multiple big names including the likes of World Champion D Gukesh, Women’s World Cup-winner Divya Deshmukh, the promising Praggnandhaa and Arjun Erigaisi to name a few.

Deshmukh was the previous Indian player to earn the norm on the back of her triumph at the FIDE Women’s World Cup with her win over seior compatriot Humpy Koneru in the final of the prestigious event.
