Crystal Palace won the Community Shield for the first time, beating Liverpool 3-2 in a penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw. Dean Henderson’s saves were crucial in the shootout.

Crystal Palace twice came from behind to shock a revamped Liverpool side, winning the Community Shield for the first time in their history after a dramatic 2-2 draw and a 3-2 triumph in the penalty shootout at Wembley on Sunday.
New Liverpool signings Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong were both on target for the Premier League champions, but Palace hit back through Jean-Philippe Mateta and Ismaila Sarr before prevailing in an error-strewn shootout.
Mohamed Salah sent his penalty over the bar, while Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott were both denied by an inspired Dean Henderson. The result handed Palace their second piece of major silverware in just four months, building on their historic FA Cup triumph over Manchester City in May.
The Community Shield, traditionally the curtain-raiser to the English football season, carried added emotional weight this year due to the tragic death of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, who was killed in a car accident alongside his brother, André Silva, during the summer.
Before kick-off, Liverpool legend Ian Rush and Palace chairman Steve Parish laid wreaths at the side of the pitch, while the Liverpool end was adorned with banners and flags paying tribute to the Portuguese international. The minute’s silence was cut short due to disturbances in the crowd, but the emotion was evident throughout the stadium.
Liverpool players wore “Forever 20″ emblems on their shirts—a tribute to Jota’s now-retired squad number—which they will carry throughout the season. In the 20th minute, fans rose to chant his name in unison.
Fast Start for Liverpool’s New Signings
Liverpool’s summer spending spree, totalling £260 million ($350 million), saw four new recruits—Ekitike, Florian Wirtz, Frimpong, and Milos Kerkez—start the match. Ekitike, signed from Eintracht Frankfurt for an initial £69 million, made an immediate impact, scoring just four minutes in.
The French striker latched onto Wirtz’s perfectly weighted pass, spun his marker, and drilled the ball into the far corner past Dean Henderson. It was a statement moment for a player whose role this season may hinge on Liverpool’s pursuit of Newcastle’s Alexander Isak.
Making their first-ever Community Shield appearance, Palace showed they could match one of England’s elite over 90 minutes. Mateta squandered a golden chance to equalise when clean through on Alisson, but from the rebound, Sarr was tripped by an uncharacteristically sluggish Virgil van Dijk.
Mateta made no mistake from the penalty spot, sending Alisson the wrong way to level the score at 1-1.
Liverpool responded in the 20th minute, right as their supporters were paying tribute to Jota. Frimpong’s chipped cross from the right caught Henderson off-guard and drifted into the far corner to restore the Reds’ lead.
Ekitike had a glorious chance to double his tally early in the second half, again supplied by Wirtz, but this time he blazed over.
Despite Liverpool’s attacking quality, Arne Slot’s side looked vulnerable defensively—an issue that had already surfaced during pre-season. Palace continually exploited space behind the backline, and they were rewarded 13 minutes from time when Sarr latched onto Adam Wharton’s through ball and coolly slotted home his fourth goal in seven matches against Liverpool.
Penalty Drama at Wembley
Liverpool had a late VAR scare when Mac Allister appeared to handle the ball in the box, but the decision went in their favour. With no extra-time in the Community Shield, the match went straight to penalties.
Salah, Mac Allister, and Elliott all failed to convert, with Henderson making two crucial saves. That left 20-year-old midfielder Justin Devenny to seal the win, blasting his spot-kick high past Alisson to crown a famous day for the Eagles.
