The athlete from Palakkad, who boasts a personal best of 8.41m came up with efforts of 7.73m, 7.58m, 7.57m, 7.80m, and 7.79m. This was Sreeshankar’s third competition since returning from a knee injury sustained in April last year.
After undergoing surgery, he missed the 2024 Olympics despite qualifying for the global event in the French capital.
Sreeshankar won the Indian Open in Pune with a jump of 8.05m in his first comeback competition and followed it up with a 7.75m effort to claim the top spot at the Meeting Maia Cidade do Desporto in Portugal.
Prior to his injury, Sreeshankar’s last international appearance resulted in a silver medal at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, in 2023.
He is yet to qualify for the Tokyo World Championships in September, where the men’s long jump qualification standard is 8.27m.
Sreeshankar was out of action for a significant period after suffering a knee injury last April, which led to his absence from the Paris Olympics 2024. He had earned a spot at the Paris Olympics by achieving an 8.37m jump to win silver at the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships.
Upon his return to the circuit, Sreeshankar secured the top position at the Meeting Maia Cidade do Desporto 2025, a World Athletics Continental Tour bronze-level event, on Sunday. The 26-year-old from Kerala recorded a best jump of 7.75m on his second attempt, narrowly beating Poland’s Piotr Tarkowski and Australia’s Chris Mitrevski, who came in second and third, respectively.
Sreeshankar made a successful comeback from his extended injury break by winning the long jump event at the Indian Open Athletics 2025 meet in Pune on July 12. His winning jump of 8.05m came on his fourth attempt at the Savitribai Phule University Sports Complex.
He started with a jump of 7.84m and improved to 7.99m before surpassing the 8m mark. The qualification standard for the World Athletics Championships 2025 is set at 8.27m.
