A man in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district has been arrested for allegedly murdering his wife and mother-in-law, burying their bodies in his backyard, and planting banana trees over the graves to cover up the crime.

The accused, Debashis Patra, a 40-year-old pharmacist from Sarapankha Nuagaon village, is believed to have killed his wife, Sonali Dalai, 23, and her mother, Somanti Dalai, on July 19 following a domestic dispute, according to police.

Police said Sonali was Patra’s second wife. He allegedly used a large stone to crush both women while they were asleep.

Initial investigations suggest that there had been ongoing marital issues between Patra and Sonali. Her mother had recently brought her back to her husband’s house on July 12 in an attempt to resolve their differences and help them reconcile. However, the effort ended in tragedy, NDTV reported.

After committing the double murder, Patra is believed to have waited until dark and took advantage of the heavy rain to transport the bodies to a lemon orchard behind his house. He dug a pit, buried both victims, and planted banana trees over the spot to avoid suspicion.

In an attempt to mislead both the police and his in-laws, Patra filed a missing persons report, claiming that Sonali and Sumati had left the village after visiting him and dropping off the couple’s child.

For several days, Patra continued living in the house with his young son, showing no signs of concern. However, local villagers began to grow suspicious after noticing freshly turned soil and newly planted banana saplings in the orchard.

When police were alerted and questioned Patra, he confessed to the crime and led officers to the burial site. The bodies, already decomposing, were exhumed and sent for post-mortem examination.

Police say the exact motive is still under investigation, but domestic violence appears to have played a major role. Patra has been taken into custody and faces murder and destruction of evidence charges.
