Two terrorists were killed in an encounter with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch on Wednesday morning.

The gunfire broke out after an infiltration bid was foiled in the Digwar sector of Poonch, as the terrorists attempted to sneak into the Indian territory from the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

The terrorists were later neutralised in a joint operation by the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Army.

This comes two days after Sulieman alias Hashim Musa, the mastermind of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, was killed after the security forces launched a surprise action, codenamed ‘Operation Mahadev’.

The Army’s elite para commandos also gunned down two of his associates in the encounter in a forest area on the outskirts of Srinagar.

Later, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced in the Lok Sabha that the three terrorists killed in ‘Operation Mahadev’ were involved in the Pahalgam attack, and were eliminated by security forces in a joint operation by the Army, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Jammu and Kashmir Police near Srinagar.

As Amit Shah concluded his speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X and wrote, “In this remarkable speech in the Lok Sabha, Home Minister Amit Shah Ji gives important details about Operation Sindoor and Operation Mahadev, which have played a vital role in eliminating cowardly terrorists.”

On Tuesday, Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat said the terrorists are being eliminated one by one in ongoing operations across the region.

“They (terrorists) have been operating here for the past four years. Operations are going on continuously. One by one, they are being eliminated,” he told reporters in Jammu, as he responded to questions about the ongoing operations and the number of terrorists killed.

In response to another question about the number of terrorists currently active in Jammu and Kashmir, he said the figures cannot be disclosed in the public domain.
