Some protesters tried to march towards the Presidential Palace, to stop which the police fired rubber bullets and tear gas at the protesters. In Cumaná, 400 km from the capital, many people tried to occupy Maduro’s United Socialist Party office, but the force foiled it.

Elections were held in Venezuela on 28 July. Pre-election surveys predicted an easy win for opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez. However, the election results were the opposite. Nicolas Maduro won the election. However, the opposition has refused to accept this victory. The opposition claims that the Election Commission has rigged the results.

Protests begin after Maduro’s victory is announced
According to the election results, President Nicolas Maduro got 51.2% votes while opposition leader Gonzalez got 44.2% votes. After Maduro’s victory, the opposition and the public have become angry. The protesters who took to the streets tore the banners of Nicolas Maduro.

They have toppled several effigies of Hugo Chavez, who was the president before Maduro. Videos related to this are going viral on social media. In one video, people are carrying the head of Hugo Chavez’s effigy tied to a bike.

Hugo Chavez led Venezuela for more than a decade and had named Nicolas Maduro as his successor. Maduro has been in power for the last 11 years. After winning the recent elections, Maduro will now remain in power from 2025 to 2030.

Maduro said – there is an attempt to overthrow Venezuela
In his televised address on Monday, President Maduro claimed that a coup attempt was being made in Venezuela. He said that he had already foreseen that this would happen after the elections, but he would not let their plans succeed.

According to a CNN report, Venezuela has been facing an economic crisis for many years. Due to sanctions imposed by the US and Western countries, this country, famous for its oil, has become isolated in the world.

Nicolas Maduro said that the rule of law will prevail in the country.

Opposition refuses to accept defeat
Opposition parties had united with Gonzalez to remove Nicolas Maduro. In a press conference on Monday evening, opposition leader Maria Machado claimed that her coalition has the support of the people. The ruling party has rigged the elections, due to which Edmundo Gonzalez could not win.

Machado is the biggest leader of the opposition coalition in Venezuela. However, she could not contest the elections due to the ban of the Supreme Court. After this, she gave her support to Gonzalez.

After the results were announced, Gonzalez said that not only the country but the whole world knows what has happened in Venezuela. He said that there was a fraud in the election results. He appealed to his supporters not to resort to violence and to protest peacefully.

UN demands data from Election Commission
On Maduro’s victory, America said that it does not believe in the election result. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed concern and said that this result does not reflect the mind of the people of Venezuela.

Many countries including the United Nations and the European Union have demanded that the results be released in a transparent manner in Venezuela. They have appealed to the election officials to release the voting records of every polling station.

Nicolas Maduro has received support from friendly countries like China, Russia and Cuba. They have congratulated the President on his third consecutive victory. However, neighboring countries have not done so. Brazilian President Lula da Silva has not congratulated yet. Colombian President Gustavo Petro has also done the same. Both these countries have leftist ideology governments like Venezuela.
