The Taliban captured Kabul as well as the whole of Afghanistan on 15 August 2021.

The Taliban has declared Afghanistan’s embassies in 14 countries invalid. These include countries like Britain, Germany, Switzerland, France, Italy and Australia. Actually, these embassies were opened during the tenure of the previous government of Afghanistan.

The Taliban Foreign Ministry said through a post on social media that any passport, visa or diplomatic document issued by these embassies will not be valid. The Taliban regime of Afghanistan will not be responsible for these.

The ministry said that to obtain new passports, people will have to contact the embassies led by the Taliban’s Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan government. All Afghan citizens living abroad will have to renew their documents by visiting the embassies of the 14 countries declared invalid as well as other diplomatic missions.

Taliban-led embassies in Pak-China
In March 2023, the Taliban regime said that it was trying to take control of as many Afghan embassies as possible. After this, the Taliban stopped services at the Afghan consulates in London and Vienna.

Following this order of the Taliban, in October last year, the Afghan Embassy in Spain and the Netherlands said that they were trying to work with the Taliban. Currently, Taliban-led embassies are present in countries like Pakistan, China and Russia.

The Afghan embassy has also been closed in India
Earlier in October last year, the Taliban had closed its embassy in India. The embassy had said that we had to do this due to lack of support and resources from the Indian government. We were not getting political support from Kabul.

Actually, this embassy in India was headed by Farid Mamundzai, who was appointed by the previous government of Afghanistan. At that time, Afghanistan was ruled by President Ashraf Ghani, who had the support of Western countries. After the Taliban took over Afghanistan, there was a shortage of staff in the Indian embassy.
