Bengali cinema veteran actor Prosonjit Chatterjee is soon bringing a new family drama show ‘Kabhi Neem Neem Kabhi Honey Honey’. The show will show the bitterness and sweetness of relationships in realistic style. Apart from this, he is also making Hindi debut with the film ‘Malik’. Special conversation with him …
How to associate with ‘Kabhi Neem Neem …’?
I am associated with the show as a producer. My first step in Hindi TV is definitely but thinking has always been national. This is very special for me. My father has been a part of Hindi films in the 60s. In such a situation, the relationship with the Hindi industry is old. Today, when we talk about ‘Pan-India’, I believe it should not be limited to films or OTT. TV is also a big medium to reach the whole country.
In every region of India, whether it is Bengal, Maharashtra, Punjab or Gujarat is tremendous talent. Now the time has come to show that talent on a national platform through television. The show’s writer and show runner is Rakhi Di (Rakhi Mallik). Whom to work with is a great experience. This story has been very simple and its simplicity is its biggest strength. In this, the difference between family, generations, and today’s thinking is threaded together.

Where is the story of the show and on whom is the focus?
The story of the show is based on the background of Rajasthan. It has a focus on the thinking of new generation and family balance. I liked its story very much and our artists are also very good in it. I also made a serial with Rituparno Ghosh, who was our director in Bengal, many years ago. So our connection is very old. He told me to do if there is a good story. So when my creative team told me this story, I said, I am very happy with it. This is a TV serial but it has something different. This is the story of a family where a girl comes and in every family, the gap between two generations.
Are you doing any project?
I am currently working a lot as an actor. So I thought, start this too. This is good because the time is not now … We are now Hindi, Bengali, Punjabi, Marathi, we should not speak. We have really become pan-India because we sit and watch the South film and some Malayali actor also watch our Bengali film. We used to say earlier that this is regional, this is the language, but now everything has become one.
I think this is the right time for talent to come on a large platform. Our Bengali actor people are doing Tamil-Telugu films. I also get offers. So Bengali people are doing Tamil-Telugu and Tamil-Telugu people … Kamal Haasan ji worked in a Bengali film a few days ago. So the difference has just gone that the actors should be stuck in a region.

The story tailing of TV shows has also become new. How do you want to change?
Now the choice of the audience has changed, and accordingly the format of the show is also changing. In today’s time, people want to see less time and strong stories. So I think the trend of short series on TV will increase soon, as is happening on OTT. Even though the name of OTT is very much in today’s era, but TV is still the biggest medium in India, because not everyone has a smartphone or internet. There are still millions of people in the country who only watch TV. Therefore, it is very important for TV content to be strong and fresh.
We have placed our show on the background of Rajasthan. This location gives a different flavor to the story. Now not only acting, but the look of the show, the style of speaking of the characters and the way of telling the story is changing everything. Now a new creative space has been formed between TV, film and OTT, where stories of different languages and cultures are dissolving in each other. Today Bengali shows are being made in Marathi, Kannada stories in Bengali. Just as a remake of the Spanish show is being made in the world, similarly in India, our regional talent can be remade and brought to the national level. People will find it completely new and fresh.
Often TV shows seem to be the same after some time monotonus. How will you make it different?
I am confident. According to the planning we have done, there will be no repetition in the show for two years. Content and characters are so different and interesting that the audience will not feel boredom. I can say with the claim that even after two and a half years it will not be monotonus. The show does not only have senior characters, but a young gang that represents today’s generation. The same makes the show different from the rest of the serials. This is not a cry-washed show, it has emotions, but they are not old patriarchal ones.

The entire show is very lively and designed today. Every creative person is worthy of respect. If it is said that some TV shows have been coming like the same format or crying, then the industry got a new direction from them, their format was so effective that the regional industries also adopted it. That is why I believe that whoever has done something new and big should be praised and responded.
You are also going to be seen in Rajkumar Rao’s film ‘Malik’. Would you like to share something?
I will talk after a date on this, but yes, this is a big thing, because now I am also becoming active in Hindi films. Not only acting, but also in production. I am also producing a Hindi film. I am trying to make a strong film with good content. In the coming days, I will announce a breaking news about a film. Very few people know about the ‘owner’ that I am also in it. It was hidden under planning. The complete picture of this will be revealed at the trailer launch. I am also releasing a film in September, based on a real historical character. I will invite selected people to screen.

How do you watch the scale of Bengali films as a producer?
See, every region has its own strength. Bengali and Marathi cinema have always been considered intellectual and literaryly strong. Like I did a film ‘Chokher Bali’, which was on a lot of scale and a big hit. Rosa also came in the same year. I believe that if the Bengali film industry has to increase the scale, then it will not be done only by showing – we have to take content, literature and our roots along. Just as Malayalam cinema is ahead in realism, Marathi cinema is known for the truth of its stories, similarly Bengali cinema should work with its strength – literature, history and thinking. If you start copying any other industry, then it will not be a matter.
