In Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, the STF and police organised a wedding for a bereaved family after a robbery and double murder

In a poignant turn of events, the house in Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda district that was left shattered by a brutal robbery and double murder just over a month ago saw a glimmer of joy and resilience on Thursday night after the UP Special Task Force (STF) and Gonda police came together to organise the wedding of a young woman from the bereaved family.
On the night of April 24-25, a chilling incident in Dixir village under the Umri Begumganj police station area shook the region, leaving a family devastated. Two members of the household were murdered during a robbery, plunging the home into grief and uncertainty. Among the immediate fallout was the cancellation of a scheduled wedding in the family, the marriage of Devidin’s sister, who belonged to the victim’s household.
But on June 5, the UP police stepped in not just as enforcers of law, but as a family. Under the leadership of STF Chief Amitabh Yash, the police and STF teams arranged the wedding, bearing all expenses, from gold and silver jewelry to cash gifts and essential items. It was a rare and moving example of humanitarian policing.

His wife, Ritu Shahi, a member of the Uttar Pradesh State Women’s Commission, performed the kanyadaan and presented wedding gifts to the bride. Throughout the ceremony, STF and police personnel embraced familial roles with Circle Officer and Inspector standing in as the bride’s brothers and uncles, while female officers took on the role of sisters.
Residents of the area, including prominent locals and neighbours, joined in as part of the gharaati (bride’s family), celebrating the wedding as a community triumph over tragedy. The atmosphere, though layered with memories of loss, was one of solidarity, strength, and emotional healing.
This touching act followed swift justice as two of the culprits involved in the April 24 murders were killed in a police encounter, with three others being jailed. Yet, beyond retribution, this gesture of arranging the wedding sent a powerful message of empathy and public service.
Locals have lauded the UP STF and Gonda police for their extraordinary initiative, calling it a rare example of law enforcement going above and beyond the call of duty to restore dignity and hope to a grieving household.
