On 23 December 1940, Walchand Hirachand established Hindustan Aircraft Limited in Bangalore in collaboration with the then Mysore government. In March 1941, the Government of India became one of the shareholders in the company and later in 1942 took its management into its hand. In January 1951, the company was placed under the administrative control of the Ministry of Defense, Government of India.
Meanwhile, in August 1963, Aeronautics India Limited (AIL) was created as a complete owned company of the Government of India to construct the MiG-21 aircraft under the license. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) was formed on 1 October 1964, two companies i.e. Hindustan Aircraft Limited and Aeronautics India Limited.
