Hegseth sworn in as defense minister

After this, Vice President JD Vance had to cast a tiebracing vote. There are 53 from Trump’s Republican Party, 45 of the Democratic Party and 2 independent MPs in the 100 -member Senate.

During the voting, 3 Republicans and 2 independent MPs voted against Hegseth. The competition was tied at 50-50. The Vice President then cast a tiebracing vote, after which Hegseth’s name was approved.
