Amitabh Bachchan recalled the early days of his film career in an episode of ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’. He said that when his film career started, his films were continuously flopping, due to which he became very disappointed and he thought of leaving acting and driving an auto-rickshaw. But then Salim-Javed offered him the film Zanjeer and after that his life changed.

Amitabh Bachchan said, ‘I had worked in two-three films, but they did not work, due to which I was disappointed. Before coming to Mumbai, I worked in Kolkata, where I got only Rs 400-500 a month. But when I came to Mumbai, I was determined that I should achieve success at any cost. I thought that if I don’t get work in films, I will drive a taxi and for this I also got a driving license.

Amitabh Bachchan further said, ‘Rajesh Khanna was the biggest superstar at that time. He had such a huge fan following that when he came, women would pick up mud from the wheels of his car and apply it on their foreheads, as if it was a blessing. I was nothing, but then Salim-Javed met me and told me this story. I didn’t expect that I would get this role, but I got it and that’s how I got Zanjeer.

The film Zanjeer was released in 1973

‘Zanjeer’, released on 11 May 1973, was the film which gave Amitabh Bachchan the taste of stardom after a struggle of 4 years. Before this, he worked in 12 films as an actor. But only two (‘Bombay to Goa’ as a lead actor and ‘Anand’ as a supporting actor) were hits. However, the struggle of Zanjeer was no less than the struggle of Amitabh.
