In the BRICS summit held in Kazan, Russia in 2024, 13 countries were given the status of partner countries.
Nigeria, a country in the African continent, on Friday formally became a partner member of BRICS. According to Russian news agency RT, Brazil’s Foreign Ministry announced that Nigeria has become the 9th official BRICS partner, along with Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan.
Brazil’s Foreign Ministry said-

The Government of Brazil, in exercise of its temporary Presidency of BRICS, today announces the official entry of Nigeria as a Partner Country into BRICS on January 17, 2025.

Brazil’s Foreign Ministry said that having the sixth largest population in the world and the fourth largest economy of the African continent (Rs 3.29 lakh crore), Nigeria’s interests coincide with those of other BRICS countries. Nigeria, together with BRICS countries, has made efforts to strengthen the Global South and improve the global order.
Last year, 13 countries were given the status of partner countries in the BRICS Summit held in Kazan city of Russia. Out of these, till now 9 countries have formally become its partner countries.

Oil and gas reserves, unrest due to mutual conflict Nigeria is the largest democratic country in Africa. Nigeria’s population is 22 crores. This country is among the countries with the fastest growing population. Nigeria has huge reserves of oil and gas, but due to mutual conflict there is constant political turmoil.
According to BBC, Nigeria is divided into two parts. Poverty is high in the northern part where Muslims are in majority. Southern and Eastern Nigeria have a large Christian population. This area is more prosperous.

Indonesia became the 10th permanent member country
On January 7, Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim country, became a permanent member of BRICS. Indonesia is the 10th permanent member country to join BRICS. Earlier, South Africa had announced the joining of Saudi Arabia along with Iran, UAE, Egypt and Ethiopia in the year 2023.
The process of Saudi Arabia joining BRICS was scheduled to start in February 2024 but at the last moment Saudi Arabia had said that it is not joining BRICS at present.

Till now 16 summits of BRICS have been held The first summit of BRIC countries was held in 2009. It was organized in Russia. After this, after the joining of South Africa in 2010, its name was changed to BRICS. BRICS summit has been held 16 times so far. Last year its 16th summit was held in Kazan city of Russia.
BRICS, built on the concept of Rising Economy, has become the third most powerful economic organization in the world. More than 46% of the world’s population lives in BRICS countries, while its share in global GDP is more than 37%.
BRICS also has its own separate bank, which is known as New Development Bank. Its headquarters is in Shanghai, China. It provides loans to member countries for government or private projects.
