Uniform Civil Code is set to be implemented in Uttarakhand in a fortnight, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced on Wednesday. Uttarakhand is the first state in the country after Independence to adopt the UCC.
The BJP-led government has also prepared a portal and a mobile application as it believes “digital measures would make registration, appeal and other services through the online medium convenient for the people”.
“Uniform Civil Code will be implemented in Uttarakhand from January 2025. Taking a historic step towards making Uttarakhand just and equitable, we have decided to implement the Uniform Civil Code from January 2025. Today, in the UIIDB meeting, necessary instructions were given to the officials on this subject,” Dhami wrote on X.
The CM further said, “While on one hand this step will prove to be a milestone in the direction of strengthening social equality and unity, on the other hand, our state will also emerge as a pathfinder for other states.”

The President gave her assent to the Uniform Civil Code, Uttarakhand, 2024 under Article 201 of the Constitution of India on March 11.
Before the Bill was passed in the Assembly, Dhami had said that UCC will put a complete ban on polygamy, polyandry, halala, iddat, and talaq as both men and women will have same rights in matters related to marriage and divorce.
If a person is found committing halala, there is a provision of three years’ imprisonment or a fine of Rs 1 lakh or both under UCC. It also allows marriages to be solemnised only between a man and a woman. The age of marriage has been set at 21 years for boys and 18 years for girls.
The UCC Bill also made it mandatory to register marriage and divorce, failing which the
couple
concerned will be deprived of the benefits of all government facilities. In case of divorce or domestic dispute between husband and wife, the custody of the child up to 5 years of age will remain with the mother.A

of weeks ago, PM Modi had praised the Uttarakhand government over its UCC law, calling it the “Secular Civil Code”.
