Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi criticized Narayana Murthy’s views on work-life balance and reminded him of gender-related challenges.
The debate has started again on Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy’s statement about work-life balance. Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Wednesday expressed disagreement with Narayana Murthy’s statement in favor of ‘overwork culture’.
She said in the X post that work-life balance is difficult for women. Traditionally, working women do not have the option to separate work and life. Traditionally only men have got this facility and now it is time for them to give up it in modern times.
In fact, last year in 2023, Narayan Murthy had advised the youth of the country to work 70 hours a week. He had said- ‘If PM Modi can work 100 hours a week then why can’t we. In 1986, when India shifted from 6-day work week to 5-day work week, I was very sad.

Gogoi said- taking care of family is also a part of work Gogoi criticized Narayana Murthy for presenting work-life balance as a myth. He said that traditionally the distribution of household work between men and women is unequal. Life is not limited to professional work only, but it also includes household responsibilities. All these works should be done equally by both men and women.
Gogoi said that nowadays both men and women have to share the responsibilities of work and life equally. The concept of work-life balance is challenging for everyone, not just women.
Murthy remained firm on his statement despite criticism Narayana Murthy was criticized a lot for his statement advising to work for 70 hours a week. Later Murthy also defended his statement. He said that hard work is very important for India’s progress. At the CNBC Global Leadership Summit on November 15, Murthy said – I am sorry, I have not changed my view. I’ll take it with me to the grave.
