The Supreme Court is set to hear the NEET-PG 2024 case, which alleges a lack of transparency in the examination process and raises concerns about the functioning of the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS).
The case will be heard today by a bench comprising Justices BR Gavai and MV Viswanathan, following five previous postponements. The most recent hearing, scheduled for November 26, was deferred after the petitioners requested a one-week adjournment.
NEET PG 2024 Controversy And Case
The controversies surrounding transparency in NEET PG 2024 erupted in September when aspirants filed a petition in the Supreme Court demanding the release of the answer key, raw marks, and details of the normalization process used to calculate the results. The apex court directed the National Board of Examinations (NBE) to file a response to the petition.
However, the NBE refused to comply, citing confidentiality as a cornerstone of its admission policy.
According to the petition, there was a clear lack of transparency in the conduct of examinations of NEET PG 2024 since none of the documents can allow a student to check his/her performance, as neither the question paper, nor the response sheet filled in by candidates nor the answer key is supplied to the students, and merely a score card has been provided along with list of attempted correctly/attempted wrongly sections.
NEET PG 2024 Case Timeline
The case, filed on September 7, 2024, by 19 candidates, has experienced five delays thus far. The first hearing took place on September 20, but subsequent sessions were postponed—on October 4 due to the absence of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, and on October 25 because the central government was not represented. A petition filed on November 12 requested that NEET PG counselling be postponed until the matter was resolved. On November 19, the Supreme Court rescheduled the hearing to November 26, which was later pushed to December 3 after the petitioners sought an adjournment.
NEET PG 2024 was conducted on August 11, 2024, by the NBEMS. A total of 228,540 candidates appeared for the exam at 416 centres across 170 cities.
