As Diwali approaches, a unique tradition known as Yam Deep holds a lot of importance and is observed a day prior to the festival. This practice holds deep spiritual significance, as it involves lighting lamps in honour of ancestors. Astrologer Dr Kunal Kumar Jha, from the Postgraduate Astrology Department at Kameshwar Singh Darbhanga Sanskrit University, shed light on the customs and rituals associated with Yam Deep during an interview with Local 18.

Ritual of Lighting Yam Deep
According to Dr Jha, the lighting of Yam Deep is accompanied by specific methods and timings. Typically, one lamp is placed at the main entrance of the home, while another is set at the location designated for household waste disposal. A traditional lamp made from cow dung is preferred, which should be lit facing south.
This year, the auspicious time to light the Yam Deep is from 6:32 PM to 8:28 PM on October 30. During this time, a mantra is often recited, adding to the ritual’s spiritual significance.

The tradition of lighting Yam Deep is rooted in mythological beliefs. It is believed that this practice not only honours ancestors but also invokes the protection of Lord Yamthe deity of death.
