During the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, the holy Mount Kailash was seen for the first time from Indian territory on 3 October. Darshan took place from the old Lipulekh pass. It is situated in the Vyas valley of Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand. Mount Kailash is considered the abode of Lord Shiva. Earlier, pilgrims had to go to Tibet to see the mountain.
Pithoragarh District Tourism Officer Kriti Chandra Arya said, there were five pilgrims in the first group. They reached Gunji camp on 2 October. To have darshan he had to climb 2.5 kilometers. It was an overwhelming experience. When he saw the holy Mount Kailash, he had tears in his eyes.
Just a few months ago, a team of officials from the Uttarakhand Tourism Department, Border Roads Organization (BRO) and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) discovered a clearly visible spot of Mount Kailash.
5 stages of the journey…
- Every passenger will have to undergo health checkup at Dharchula (11 km from Pithoragarh). You will get the permit here.
- On the first day, we will reach Gunji village from Pithoragarh by helicopter. Will spend the night here.
- Next day by car we will go to Jollingkong for darshan of Adi Kailash. Will return to Gunji in the evening and spend the night.
- On the third day we will return to Kailash View Point. Will spend the third night in Gunji.
- Will return to Pithoragarh by helicopter on the fourth day.
Yatra organized as a pilot project of Uttarakhand Tourism Department Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami congratulated all the departments that made Kailash Darshan possible from inside the Indian border. He said that this shows the commitment of the state government. Now Shiva devotees will not have to wait for Kailash-Mansarovar Yatra. They will be able to have darshan of God from inside the Indian border only.
At the same time, Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj described the successful organization of the first yatra as a historic event for Shiva devotees. He said that the state government is committed to provide a unique and memorable experience to the pilgrims.
This trip was organized as a pilot project of Uttarakhand Tourism Department. Let us tell you, after Covid, the traditional Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Tibet was suspended for many years.
Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is organized by the Ministry of External Affairs between June and September.

If the pilgrim takes a worker or helper from Nepal to help him, then he has to pay an additional amount of 300 dollars, i.e. 25 thousand rupees. This fee is called ‘Grass Damaging Fee’. China argues that during the journey, the grass around Mount Kailash gets damaged, which will be compensated by the traveler.
The rules for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra have also been made difficult.
New rules, which made travel difficult…
- The traveler first has to personally go to the Chinese Embassy and obtain the visa. Online application is not accepted.
- After that one has to undergo biometric identification process at Kathmandu or other base camp.
- To get a visa, it is now necessary to have a group of at least five people. Out of these, four people will have to compulsorily reach in person for the visa.
- Nepali workers entering Tibet have to pay $300 as grass damaging fee. This expense has to be borne by the pilgrim himself.
- A stay fee of Rs 13,000 for 15 days is also charged for accompanying a worker. Earlier it was only Rs 4,200.
The journey takes 2 to 3 weeks There are three different routes for Kailash Yatra. First- Lipulekh Pass (Uttarakhand), second- Nathu Pass (Sikkim) and third- Kathmandu. These three routes take a minimum of 14 and a maximum of 21 days. In 2019, 31 thousand Indians had gone on a trip, after which the trip was stopped. …………………………….
