Position of various Indian divisions 170 million years ago.
The process of formation of the Indian landmass that we see on the map today began 150 crore years ago. It took 50 crore years to complete. The Himalayas did not exist then. The present landmass of the country is Karnataka-Andhra and Telangana in the south, Chhattisgarh-Odisha in the south-east, Jharkhand in the east.
.
This was revealed after 18 years of research conducted by the research team under the guidance of geologist Prof. MK Pandit of Rajasthan University. Along with him, Prof. Joseph Mert of Florida University also played a major role. The paleomagnetic properties and radioactive age of the rocks were calculated in the Florida lab.
For this, 2 thousand samples from hundreds of rocks of 5 oldest landmasses were tested in the lab. Giving international recognition to the research, the prestigious research journal ‘Gondwana Research’ has published it.
Position of various Indian divisions 170 crore years ago
The map shows that three major southern landmasses were in the south of the present and their relative positions were different. With time, their positions changed and they shifted and got connected to the northern landmasses. Western Rajasthan, Thar, Pakistan and Oman got connected to Aravalli and the process of geographical integration of the country was completed 100 crore years ago.
Prof. MK Pandit, former Professor, Rajasthan University. He has been a member of the Indian Antarctic expedition team twice.

Prof. Joseph Mert Prof. University of Florida. Several international fellowships for research in the field of geophysics.
Evidence of ocean found in the area around MP 170 crore years ago
- The research found evidence that 1.7 billion years ago, there was an ocean in the recent central Indian region, which the team named ‘Gotosindhu’.
- Until now there was no concrete information about integration. This paved the way for accurate research on the ancient state of the world.
- Research is being conducted across the world to understand the ancient state of the Earth’s structure and the expansion of continents and oceans.
In this context, both the professors focused their research on Indian territory. They prepared a research project and submitted it to the National Science Foundation, America. After getting approval from here, funding was done. Then the research was done.
