Voting will take place in America today for midterm elections. According to Indian time, voting will start at 4:30 pm. In these elections, votes will be cast for all 435 seats of the House of Representatives, the lower house of the US Parliament, and 35 seats of the Senate, the upper house.
In America, midterm elections are held exactly two years after the presidential election. In this, voting takes place for the seats of Parliament and for the posts of Governor in some states.
At present, Trump’s Republican Party has majority in both houses of Parliament. If the party loses majority in even one of these houses, it will be difficult for Trump to pass laws related to his agenda.

Mathematics of majority in US Parliament
Different number of seats are required to achieve majority in both houses of the US Parliament.
51 seats required for majority in the Senate
- There are a total of 100 seats in the Senate. Currently the Republican Party has 53 seats, while the Democratic Party has 45. Apart from this, there are 2 independent MPs, who work closely with the Democrats. In this way the ratio of seats between the two parties is 53-47.
- Support of 51 members is necessary for majority. However, if both parties have 50-50 seats, Vice President JD Vance can cast the deciding vote.
- This time elections are to be held on 35 seats of the Senate. Of these, 22 seats are held by the Republican Party and 13 seats by the Democratic Party. Democrats will have to make a net gain of at least 4 seats to gain majority.

218 seats required for majority in the House
- There are a total of 435 seats in the House of Representatives, the lower house of the US Parliament. Here 218 seats are required for majority.
- This time elections are to be held on all 435 seats of the House, meaning there will be competition on every seat. The party which gets 218 or more seats will gain majority in the House.
- In this way, in the midterm elections, the Republican Party will have to save its majority in both the houses, while the Democrats will try to get majority in both the houses.

4 big issues in midterm elections in America…
1. Iran war and inflation
After the start of the Iran war, diesel has become costlier by 70% and petrol by 50% in America. Trump’s approval rating has fallen to 31%. Rising fuel prices are a challenge for the Republican Party in the midterm elections. Trump is also being criticized for his decision to buy more than 3 lakh metric tons of diesel from Russia.
2. Immigration and illegal immigrants
About 9.8 lakh people were deported in the first 18 months of Trump’s second term. Illegal infiltration on Mexico border reduced by 95%. But there is opposition to the raids and the expulsion of people without criminal records. Democrats charge that it is separating families, while causing labor shortages in sectors like farming and construction.
3. Tariffs and Jobs
Trump had promised to benefit American companies and jobs from the tariffs. But due to this, the prices of vehicles, electronics, clothing and construction materials are claimed to increase by 12% to 18%. Tariffs have increased expenses for American families and retaliatory tariffs from other countries have affected farmers’ soybean and corn businesses.
4. Right to abortion and expensive treatment
According to the KFF survey, the right to abortion is a major election issue for 68% of women voters and 74% of youth aged 18 to 29 years. Democrats want women to have the legal right to have an abortion nationwide. At the same time, Republicans want each state to decide for itself whether abortion will be allowed there or not. At the same time, 2.13 crore people avail health insurance under Obamacare. The issue of insurance becoming expensive due to reduction in government support is also important in the elections.
Tough competition on 5 Senate seats

1. Texas: The race between Republican Ken Paxton and Democrat James Talarico is a tie. In two October surveys, both received 49% of the vote, while in another survey Talarico was ahead by 3.8 points.
2. Ohio: Republican Jon Husted faces Democrat Sherrod Brown. Brown is ahead by 4 to 6 points in the survey. This seat is important for Republicans to save their majority.
3. North Carolina: Democrat Roy Cooper is 13 points ahead of Republican Michael Watley in the survey with 52% of the vote. Michael got 39% votes.
4. Michigan: Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has a slight lead over Republican Mike Rogers. The survey has Al-Sayed at 50% and Rogers at 48%.
5. Main: Democrat Troy Jackson leads the survey with 49% of the vote, ahead of Republican Senator Susan Collins (47%). Collins got 47% of the votes.
