Kylian Mbappe put a turbulent week behind him on Sunday, scoring from the spot as Real Madrid beat Racing Santander 3-0.

The French forward narrowly missed out on the Ballon d’Or to Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane on Monday, then apologised after backlash over a video in which he joked about former Chinese leader Mao Zedong. Chinese state television did not broadcast Madrid’s match or other Spanish fixtures this weekend amid the fallout.

Jude Bellingham and Yan Diomande also scored as third-placed Madrid stayed three points behind Barcelona, 6-1 winners over Alaves on Saturday. Jose Mourinho’s side have won six straight matches and are one point behind Atletico Madrid, who beat Levante 2-0.

Mbappe won a penalty after going down under little pressure from Matteo Prati and converted in the 11th minute at the Sardinero. It was his 12th league goal of the season, behind Barcelona’s Raphinha on 15.

Arda Guler sent Bellingham through to score Madrid’s second. The England midfielder rounded the goalkeeper for his 50th goal since joining the club in 2023.

Guler missed a chance after Mbappe set him up, before record signing Diomande struck from the edge of the area. Racing began the second half strongly, drawing an angry response from Mourinho, but Madrid regained control. Mbappe hit the post and Bellingham was denied by Julen Agirrezabala.

Racing were awarded a penalty for Aurelien Tchouameni’s handball, but VAR overturned the decision. Bellingham had a stoppage-time goal ruled out for offside, and Endrick shot narrowly wide.
